Yucatan is a state of abundant natural resources within a privileged geographic location, vast coastal areas and a priceless natural, artistic and archeological heritage, crowned by its emblematic Chichen Itza, one of the seven new wonders of the world. This state is the axis of one of the 10 fastest growing regions among the OCDE member countries, but as commented by this organism, the resources and strategic location of Yucatan are being underused. State economy is based on tourism, agriculture, fishing and commerce. The importance of tourism has notably increased since Yucatan became linked and integrated into the Mayan Caribbean destination on the eastern coast of the peninsula and its archeological heritage became recognized as one of the most popular tourism attractions in the world. In the mid 1980’s, the Henequen Reordering and integral Development Programs of Yucatan began, achieving an important structure change in the region’s economy with an increase of the sector’s participation in local products. Products derived from henequen, such as ropes, sacks, rugs, coverings and many more, became export products that brought much needed resources for financing the state’s development. The reason for these trends are found in the region’s specializing within the manufacturing and selective exports industries, but mainly on the development of tourism services that prompted a significant growth of buildings and transportation, not only within the state, but for the whole peninsula. The new industrial activity substituted the rope industry and absorbed part of the rural workforce historically employed in the cultivation and processing of henequen fiber. The sectors of greatest growth in the last years are related to the service industry, such as communication and transportation, commerce, hotels and restaurants, financial and real estate institutions.
