Politics of Michoacán

Morelia is a city with small and medium sized companies producing oil derivates, flour, plastics, candies and a vast array of services, including tourism. The capital of Michoacán includes the Morelia Industrial City (CIMO), spanning over more than 400 hectares and hosting 200 employment-producing companies. 30% of these companies are manufacturers, while the others are warehouses or distribution centers. The industry of Morelia is dedicated to the production of edible oil, chemical products, resins, flour, plastic, candies and soft drinks. It also has the largest fertilizer plant in Latin America (Fertinal). Avocado is the Michoacán’s leading product and the one generating the greatest revenue nationwide in the agricultural sector. The avocado cluster spans over various municipalities and its main market is throughout Mexico, followed by United States and Japan. Its main production in mining is gold, silver, lead, zinc and copper because 32 of its municipalities own important deposits of these minerals. The Port of Lázaro Cárdenas, in the Pacific coast, is the venue of Acerlor-Mittal, the greatest iron and steel complex of Latin America, besides being the industrial port receiving the greatest volume for being the only one nationwide with an 18 meter draft, allowing it to receive ships of up to 185,000 tons, fifth generation or cape size vessels that due to their dimensions can’t pass through the Panama Channel. Morelia has consecrated its tourism vocation thanks to its notable tourism attractions, for which UNESCO declared Morelia City World Heritage for its impressive historic center. There are numerous arts and culture events displayed in its beautiful colonial buildings, theaters, night centers and bars, such as the International Music Festival, International Film Festival and International Guitar Festival.
