About Ixtapan de la Sal

Located only 82 kilometers from the city of Toluca, this small and beautiful city in Mexico State is the perfect image of the towns with narrow cobblestone streets and characteristic red brick roofs decorating its simple houses, it has gained importance as a tourism destination because of its great first-class hotel infrastructure.

The first dwellers of Ixtapan de la Sal registered in history were a group of Indians from the Pacific coast that in 1394, on their way to the Great Tenochtitlan, found salt formed by the hot waters springs gushing at this exuberant and peaceful place. Since salt was highly valued in the era's commercial exchange, the area became populated for exploiting its natural resource.

Upon the arrival of the Spaniards, Andres de Tapia was sent to conquer the salty city; later, he arrived to begin the evangelization process of missionary Juan Guichen de Leyva of the San Francisco Order, designating Virgin de la Asunción as the city's patron.

The small city's tranquility, with a benevolent climate and abundant vegetation similar to paradise, continued to grow without hurries and in the XX century reached a city category.

Currently, the establishment of great resorts and first-quality spas has promoted the development of the perfect Mexico State resting area.
