Despite being the smallest state of the Federation in terms of territory, the Federal District contains the largest concentration of inhabitants in the country, as well as the largest and strongest economy in the nation, contributing close to 23% to the Gross Domestic Product. In addition, it attracts 64% of foreign investment and holds the highest average income per inhabitant in the country, three times that of the national average. Seat of the federal government, of the corporate offices of many of the companies operating in Mexico and a popular tourist destination, the Distrito Federal is based on an economy conformed by the Services sector with 40%; by commerce, hotels and restaurants with 18%; by the financial and real-estate sector with 15%; and by the manufacturing industries with 12%, which include the foods and beverages, textiles, paper and automotive sectors. It is worth mentioning that a very high percentage of the economically, active population belong within the informal sector of the economy, making a living as street vendors, boot-blacks, second-hand clothes merchandisers, or working in every other trade imaginable. Only 0,3% of the capitals population works within the primary sector of the economy, and the state stands out as a national leader in the production of prickly pear, rosemary, flowers in general and geranium, and is also strong in the supply of fi and broccoli
