Uninhabited until 1927 when fishers of other Sonora ports started to arrive for practicing weakfish fishing, a fish of great size and very valued in the northern United States for its medical properties. Slowly and gradually the population of Punta Peñasco developed and in 1941 it was named municipal commissary, with a population of 187 residents between fishermen and workers of the railway on the Sonora "– Baja California route.

In 1952 it was granted the category of sovereign municipality.

Outstanding for being the venue of constant water and sports events for sailing, motorcycle, off-road, sand motorcycles and diving aficionados.
