Masaryk, the most luxurious avenue in Mexico

Characterized by its exclusiveness, fame and rich cultural diversity, it is home to residents of Jewish, Spanish and Lebanese origin, among others, and promotes a sophisticated life style for its shopping centers, jewelry stores, restaurants, hotels and shops, providing a cosmopolitan and unique environment to this part of Mexico City.

Polanco started at the beginning of the 1920’s. The land that belonged to the Morales Estate was divided and today, its Main House is one of the most prestigious restaurants in Mexico City. At the beginning of the century, this land was occupied by wealthy Jewish, Spanish and Lebanese merchants who wanted to leave the City’s Historic Center, transforming Polanco into one of the most elegant zones with a family and community flair.

During these last years, Polanco has experienced a significant increase in construction, modifying its original look. Hotels, shopping malls, art galleries, shops, and apartment and office buildings have increased its commercial importance.

In the middle of this neighborhood is Avenida Presidente Masaryk. Considered the most important of Latin America for having the most prestigious boutiques of Mexico City, it is even compared to New York’ 5th Avenue and Rodeo Drive of Los Angeles. But there are not only boutiques on this avenue; it also has prestigious restaurants and museums like Rufino Tamayo and Modern Art. This avenue is named in honor of President Masaryk, who governed Czechoslovakia from 1918 to 1935.

Mazaryk is the emblem of Polanco, evoking many eras, since the time when the neighbors developed a very participative life style, and especially a sense of belonging, care and respect for their environment; until the later decades when Polanco and Masaryk became surrounded by a great urban zone, avenues, traffic and commerce that radically transformed the place’s physiognomy. Those first migrations of hard working and enterprising settlers who gave it prestige and recognition still feel nostalgia for the time when the tailor, baker and school teacher formed a single community.
