Attractions of Baja California Sur

The Peninsula of Baja California Sur is a paradise strip between Cortes Sea and the Pacific Ocean that has become famous as one of the favorite tourism destinations for adventure, rest and entertainment. It boasts spectacular cities, nostalgic towns, and breathtaking landscapes, deserts, mountains and beaches.

DIVING AT CORTES SEA

Close to three thousand marine species inhabit the waters of Cortes Sea. Precisely for this biological wealth, it is considered one of the most beautiful natural scenes in the world. French biologist Jacques Cousteau called it “The World’s Aquarium”. Every year, hundreds of tourists come to dive in its blue water for the unforgettable experience of swimming alongside the planet’s most exotic beings.

Out of the total species registered, 800 live in coral reefs, so the options to explore are many. For example, Cabo Pulpo is one of the few living coral reefs in North America, hosting all kinds of marine mammal and multicolored fish species.

SPORTS FISHING

Because of its multiple scenarios and great weather, sports fishing is one of the most important and popular recreational activities in Baja California Sur, offering a vast array of alternatives. La Paz, Los Cabos and Loreto, where this practice is promoted, there are specialized service providers renting the necessary boats and equipment. Sports fishing fans can put their skills and strength to test on the legendary blue marlin, swordfish, tuna, Wahoo and horse mackerel, among 850 other species inhabiting the beautiful waters of Baja California Sur.

Cabo San Lucas hosts the yearly tournament planned by the StateÂ’s Department of Tourism, called Circuito de Pesca Deportiva en Baja, where more than 200 boats from around the world compete.

LA BAJA MIL

1000 miles of winding and arid roads are the driving challenge intrepid drivers must face for becoming worthy of the recognition after having conquered the sun and sand of the Baja California Sur desert. This traditional race has had many fans since 1976 by providing extreme speed and danger thrills, as well as the gratifying view of its awe-inspiring landscapes.

THE ISLANDS

For nature lovers, the islands on the South of the California Peninsula are a goal granted by an unforgettable encounter with the sea and those isolated strips of paradise, home to unique colonies of sea lions, water birds, turtles and a one of a kind biodiversity. Outstanding among these are Isla Cabos, Punta Eugenia, Isla Natividad, Magdalena and Santa Margarita, a group of islands that are a sanctuary of wildlife, rich with crustaceans, mollusks and edible fish. Cortes Sea, owing its name to the Conquistador on his 1553 expedition, is proud to host Isla Cerralvo, with ancient fame for its abundance of precious pearls.

PEACE CARNIVAL

The iconic image of South California is festive and concentrated on its Peace Carnival with more than 100 years of tradition, held at Malecon Alvaro Obregon, it is the party where uninhibited joy is shared by the locals with the thousands of visitors who come party every year.

This celebration includes contests, beauty, happiness and imagination throughout its parade, Happiness King and Queen Coronation, Burning of Bad Humor, spectacular Navy Combat and traditional Facha and Fantasía dance. The only way to describe this carnival is by experiencing it!
