Geography of Morelos

Morelos is one of the smallest Mexican states, as it covers and area of only 4,893 sq. kilometers which represents 0.2% of Mexico’s territory . It is located in the central part of Mexico and borders to the north with Mexico State and the DF, Distrito Federal. To the east and southeast with Puebla, to the south and southwest with Guerrero. Cuernavaca is the capital city. The mountain chain and valleys of the southern Sierra Madre lie to the east and occupies half of the state’s territory. The other half belongs to the neo-volcanic axis formation of the lakes and volcanoes of the Anáhuac sub-province where the beautiful Popocatépetl volcano is located at 5500 meters above sea level. Other volcanoes found are: Ololica, at 3,280 meters above sea level and Tesoyo at 3,180 meters above sea level. Cerro Tres Cumbres, at 3,280 msnm, Cerro el Tezoyo, at 3,180 msnm; Cerro las Mariposas, at 2,150 msnm and Cerro Yoteco, at 2,100 msnm, are some of the highest peaks among others. Balsas is the mayor hydrological region of the state; the Río Grande de Amacuzac river basin covers 86% of the land. The main rivers are Amacuzac, Cuautla, Yautepec-Jerusalén, Chalma, Chivato, Quita Mula, Chalchihuapan, Temembe, Mexicapa, Colotepec-Apatlaco and the Río Salado river. There are only three reservoirs in the state due to the mountainous topography of the region : Presa Emiliano Zapata , Laguna El Rodeo and Presa La Poza dams. In the highest elevations, pines, firs, cedars, oyamels and abeto trees are common. In the lower hills: oaks and paradise tree; in the valleys: willows, fig tree and ahuehutes; and at the foot of the hills, ferns, figs and laurels. Coyotes, hawks, eagles, skunks, quails are found in the sierras; doves, ducks and chichichuilotes are mostly seen in the valleys. The climate is warm and humid through out 70% of the state, the rainy season being during the summer months. The southern part has a milder cooler climate with the rainy season from September to June and a 20ºC average temperature.
