The state governor, elected for the period 2005-2011 is Mr. Carlos Zeferino Torreblanca, its administration is run from the capital city of Chilpancingo de los Bravo.

The local municipality of Cochoapa El Grande is in fact considered as the poorest and more isolated in all of Mexico, a community of some 15,000 residents, mostly of indigenous descent, living in truly alarming conditions, for as much as 94% of the inhabitants lack sewer systems and 76% are illiterate.
The state Secretary for Rural Development offers various programs for temporary work and support to the agricultural regions through the "Alliance with You" program, which aims at improving life conditions in the severely marginalized areas of the state, and also offers a program for the strengthening of the productive cycles, while the state General secretary aids the population in terms of labor training and serves as a link between the unemployed and potential employers at major corporations.
