About Puerto Peñasco

Located on the northeast coast of the Mexican State of Sonora, this attractive port has a 110 kilometer-long coast along Cortes Sea. Of dry warm climate, it registers an average annual temperature of 80º F with rainfall during the winter. Today it is one of the favorite destinations for North American tourists fleeing to the south during their strong winters. This is why the place is also known as Rocky Point.

Uninhabited until 1927 when fishers of other Sonora ports started to arrive for practicing weakfish fishing, a fish of great size and very valued in the northern United States for its medical properties. Slowly and gradually the population of Punta Peñasco developed and in 1941 it was named municipal commissary, with a population of 187 residents between fishermen and workers of the railway on the Sonora – Baja California route.

In 1952 it was granted the category of sovereign municipality.

The main economic industries at Puerto Peñasco are fishing and commerce, having a great fishing fleet and many processing companies. The main fish and seafood are shrimp, chano, blue crab, sawfish and snapper shark.

Additionally, annual tourism of nearly 200 thousand visitors has contributed to developing infrastructure in hotels, restaurants and recreation centers plus this industry’s commerce and services. Outstanding for being the venue of constant water and sports events for sailing, motorcycle, off-road, sand motorcycles and diving aficionados. This is the reason why local authorities organize cultural festivals promoting the beautiful traditional Mexican culture.
