Lorena Ochoa, The great Mexican Golfer

Until recently, there was a great segmentation in the sports world; sporting activities were dominated by a specific gender, like Golf. Despite this, today sports in the whole world have suffered profound modifications; new technical and technological proposals are at their reach, as well as new paradigms referring to who can practice each of them.

Such is the case of the Mexican golfer Lorena Ochoa who in a short time has achieved worldwide recognition in a sport that was formerly related only to men. The athlete was born in the State of Jalisco in the City of Guadalajara in 1981. She spent her childhood in Tapalpa, also in Jalisco , returning to the State’s capital in 1986.

Those first years next to a Golf Club defined her main interest in the sport. She was 5 years old when she started playing, taking a course from which she soon developed great skills and quickly triumphing in tournaments, until reaching the national championship at seven years of age.

The career of Lorena Ochoa since then has been vertiginous, at eight years she had the title as the country’s best junior player, winning the Championship in that category in San Diego, California. In 1990 she obtained the triumph in the Japan Cup. The academic life is combined with the sports life. So in 2000 she studied at the University of Arizona, preparing in her favorite area, participating in School Golf.

In 2002 she played the Futures tour, achieving diverse victories and placing herself as the best. Since then she has headed the tournaments, always ranking among the 10 best. However, it has been during the last years when she has crowned herself with the most important recognitions: Best National Player in United States, also establishing her own records with a 70.13 average; the National Sports Prize of Mexico in 2002. She has 100 tournaments within the Ladies’ Professional Golf Association and is recognized since 2007 as the world’s number one.
