Duties of the Main Federal Government Departments in Mexico

The Mexican State fulfills its main goal by guaranteeing the economic, political and social development of its citizens; for such, public powers are represented by State Departments, granted faculties and an annual budget by Law.

Secretaría de Gobernación (Interior Minister)
It is in charge of presenting the Congress of the Union with the initiatives or Executive decrees, as well as publishing laws, it is also in charge of managing and publishing the Diario Oficial de la Federación (Official Diary of the Federation) and most importantly still, to conduct the interior policies of the Executive, watching over compliance to the constitutional precepts by authorities and conducting the relations of the Executive with other Union powers, as well as the political relationships of the country’s political parties and groups. Additionally, it has the authority to supervise compliance with dispositions regarding public worship, churches and religious groups, and the respect for public peace and morals in communication media, among other faculties.

Secretaría de Hacienda y Crédito Público (Secretariat of Finance and Public Credit)
It is in charge of proposing, directing and controlling economical policies, in areas as finance, fiscal, public expenditure, income and administering public debt.

Secretaría de Relaciones Exteriores (Department of Foreign Affairs)
Article 89 of the Constitution in its fraction X, gives faculty to the Executive to conduct foreign policy and celebrate international treaties, this Department is in charge of representing foreign affairs, and also make sure these are based on self-determination, not intervention, the peaceful solution of controversies, judicial equality of the States, cooperation, peace and international safety.

Secretaría del Trabajo y Previsión Social (Department of Labor and Social Security)
This department is in charge of making sure the dispositions of Constitutional article 123 are abided by, and those contained in the Federal Labor Law and its respective regulations. Simultaneously, it must guarantee the worker’s rights, thus having the faculty to intervene in work contracts, in their formulation and promulgation, also searching for the promotion of labor productivity in the country. It directs the National Employment Service and the coordination and establishment of the Board of Conciliation and Arbitration.

Secretaría de Salud (Department of Health)
The Department of Health is in charge of planning, ruling, coordinating and evaluating the National Health System, as well as safeguarding the participation of offices and public entities in these types of services, guaranteeing the population’s right to health and compliance with the General Health Law.

Secretaría de Educación (Department of Education)
Its main goal is creating the conditions necessary so all Mexicans have access to quality education, in the degree and mode required according to their particular conditions. It rules and coordinates the application of the General Education Law in Basic, University and Technical Education.

Secretaría de Comunicaciones y Transportes (Department of Communication and Transport)
It is in charge of promoting and generating infrastructure and services for communication and transport, giving access to all citizens, contributing to their quality of life and integrating them to their national and international social environment, by using the technological advances for improving society’s social and economic activities.
