Best Golf Courses in Mexico: Pacific Coast, Cabo and Baja

Puerto Los Cabos

Conceived with faith in the future and respect for the past, Puerto Los Cabos has been guided by a vision of merging luxury and adventure with a wonderful lifestyle. Grupo Questro acquired 2,000 acres of this amazing place to turn it into what is today the magnificent Puerto Los Cabos.

The golf course in Puerto Los Cabos is the newest in Cabo San Lucas. The resort is home to two excellent courses - the Mission Course designed by Greg Norman and the Marina Course by Jack Nicklaus. This elite experience allows you to compare the philosophies of the two most famous designers in the world. It is suitable for players of all levels.

The sophisticated design of the spectacular clubhouse reflects the resort’s commitment to the highest standards of quality and style. It offers practice courses, professional lessons, a pro-shop and restaurants with panoramic views of the courses.

The Puerto Los Cabos development is located along the Sea of Cortez, east of San José del Cabo in the Baja California peninsula, only 10 minutes from Los Cabos International Airport.

Punta Brava, Baja California

Famous for the exceptional goals which he sets himself in all his projects, Tiger Woods is designing his first seafront golf course with the same passion that characterizes his play, in a dramatic corner of Mexico known as Punta Brava, in Ensenada, Baja California.

The 6,835 yard, par 70 course will sit on the tip of the peninsula, which extends 7 miles into the Pacific Ocean.

In the centre of a private community, the Punta Brava course will be positioned to have the most spectacular views afforded by this impressive location.

Tiger is working with his team of experts to take advantage of the topography of the area, which dramatically sets rocky formations against a beautiful beach. Seven greens are located on the sea and eight of the shots are played over water - a special challenge for all the lovers of this thrilling sport. The project began to materialize in early 2009 and is forecast to be completed at the end of 2010.

La Querencia de Tom Fazio, Cabo

One of the best-known designers in the world of golf has left a footprint in Mexico with one of the most prestigious and luxurious private communities in the country. When you combine a golf genius like Tom Fazio with the natural virtues of one of the most beautiful areas of the world, as it is Los Cabos, the outcome is a true golfing paradise. La Querencia, has had to compensate the disadvantage of not being by the sea, with a fascinating design, impeccable fairways and greens, and an unerring integration with the desert mountains of the region.

This is a private course, so you must belong to the community to enjoy it. It boasts 7,070 yards and without doubt is one of our favorite courses in our exclusive list of Mexican golfing jewels.

Península, Puerto Peñasco

Peninsula Golf Club is a charming discovery we’ve made in one of the most promising destinations in Mexico. Carved out of the desert, surrounded by mystical desert-like vegetation and the blue waters of the Sea of Cortez, this course is a pioneer in the Puerto Peñasco development. Peninsula was created by Mayan Resorts and is a product of the creative design team Jack Nicklaus & Jack Nicklaus II.

Virtually all the holes have a majestic ocean view, and large rock formations in the distance provide a special framework to the spectacular Península. The course is a par 72 with 7,100 yards and the lovely estuaries which are a badge of this course’s clubhouse. The green fee is US$160, but discounts are available for guests of Mayan Resorts.

One and Only Palmilla, Cabo

Home to the most special golfing developments in Mexico, San José del Cabo - better known alongside Cabo San Lucas as “Los Cabos” – is, without a doubt, the dream of every golfer in every corner of the planet. It is here where we find one of our favorite courses in Mexico – one which is capable of offering us the most sublime golfing experience. With 27 holes divided into three parts - Ocean Course, Mountain Course, and Arroyo Course - comprising 9 holes each, this course offers marvelous views of the Sea of Cortez from the desert region with enormous cacti and beautiful colorful flowers.

One and Only Palmilla has been listed as one of the Top 100 golf resorts in the world by “Great Golf Resorts of the World”, and has a total of more than 7,000 yards. The green fees range from US$190 to US$255 depending on the season. Between July and September fees are US$190.

Vista Vallarta, Puerto Vallarta

Vista Vallarta is a unique destination in Mexico. It complements the extraordinary attractiveness of Puerto Vallarta, one of the most popular havens in Mexico for its natural beauty, joy and warmth. Vista Vallarta perfectly accommodates every golf lover who is looking for a complete destination. With 478 acres, the two professional courses designed by two famous experts in the field, double the fascination of enjoying Mexican’s golfing world.

The first Jack Nicklaus Signature is characterized by the bay view, enormous trees, green meadows and lovely natural rivers. The second course by Tom Weiskopf contrasts with the first one because it is carved from the dense vegetation and thick jungle which is typical of the lower elevation of this area. Vista Vallarta has attracted the attention of important professional golf tournaments such as the EMC World Cup, the TaylorMade Invitational and the Puerto Vallarta Golf Classic Champions Tour, amongst others.

The green fee rate is around US$183.

El Tamarindo Golf Resort

The Mexican Pacific coastline is one of the most exceptional on the entire planet. Golf courses, extraordinary fishing, a unique climate, ports of worldwide distinction and first-class resorts are just a few of the attributes which make this coast stand out as a real national treasure. One of the jewels which make up this area is the sublime golf course called “The Tamarindo Golf Resort”. With huge imposing cliffs where the sea crashes against the rocks, and multiple views of the blue horizon, the 18 holes of El Tamarindo are part of a natural reserve of more than 2,040 hectares. This course is located in the state of Jalisco, equidistant from Puerto Vallarta and Manzanillo on the Costa Alegre.

Enjoy its extraordinary holes which flow into the rocky seas, its finest fairways and impeccable greens. The green fee is US$165 from May to November and US$205 from December to April. At only 31 miles from Manzanillo Airport, and 132 miles south of Puerto Vallarta, this destination is undoubtedly one of the best in Mexico.

Cabo del Sol, Ocean Course

One of our favorites! Certainly a very special course in México. Cabo del Sol currently has two courses - Desert and Ocean Course - but we are dedicating this space to talk about one of the most precious golfing treasures, not only in México, but in the whole world: The Ocean Course. Designed by the golfing legend Jack Nicklaus, and with more than a mile of coastline with views of the incredible beach and deep blue horizon of the Sea of Cortez, this will delight any golf fan. Lined with different rocky formations set against the desert sands, the fairways of Cabo del Sol offer an amazing sight.

Golf Magazine names it as one of the Top 100 courses in the world, and Jack Nicklaus has said that it has three of the best end-of-course holes in the world. The green fee varies depending on the season. In high season it is one of the most expensive in Mexico. From October to June is US$350 - but it’s worth spending!
Enjoy this paradise. Besides, in whale season it is amazing to see the view of the horizon invaded by the spurts of these enormous animals.

Punta Mita Golf Course

This course is unique - undoubtedly one of the most spectacular courses in Mexico. Designed by the great legend Jack Nicklaus, this course of over 7,000 yards challenges the best players in the world but offers an extraordinary experience to all golf fans who have the opportunity to visit this paradise. Nicklaus delights players with a green on a natural island, 175 yards from the coast. It is the only green on a natural island in the world. We challenge you not to land in the water!!!

The course is designed principally for the guests of the Four Seasons Resort of Punta Mita and partners and owners of surrounding development land. It is 45 minutes from the centre of Puerto Vallarta in the state of Nayarit. If you decide to visit and enjoy this Mexican paradise, make your reservations in the Four Seasons Hotel - otherwise you won’t be able to play, as it’s not a public course.
