Archaeological Sites in Campeche; Chicanná and Chunhuhub

CHICANNÁ; Chicanna stands out for its wonderful Structure II, where you can find an enormous fantastic face of Itzamma, the creator god, where you can see the remains of stucco in red and blue and the glyphs. Its name means “the house of the serpent’s mouth”, conceived as a city for the elite because of the place’s wealth. This site was inhabited from 300 BC to 300 AD, approximately.

Exemplary in Chicanna is Structure I, an elongated construction with two rows of three rooms each, flanked by two towers decorated with houses for Chaac. Structure II is found to the east of the plaza and is a one story building on a platform, its façade is decorated with a face representing Itzama. To the north is Structure III, formed by a low foundation with a stairwell in the center and a series of rooms to the sides. Structure IV is very similar to III. Structure VI is located to the center’s southeast.

To reach Chicana you must take Federal Highway 180 towards Cahampoton town and then highway 186 in the Escárcega – Chetumal direction, found on kilometer 141. The schedule for visitors is from 08:00 to 17:00 hrs. Climate is very hot during spring, we recommend you wear light clothes and during the months of June, July and August, climatic and physical precautions are necessary for a comfortable stay.

CHUNHUHUB; This site’s buildings are characterized for the harmony between light and dark on its façades. The masonry has lasted at least ten centuries; its constructions are covered in carved stones, perfectly cut and assembled. Chunhuhub means “Next to the Snail”; it was inhabited between 600 and 800 AD.

Structure I is composed by two levels with 13 vaulted rooms, on its main façade you can observe a strip with geometric motifs alternating with sculptures similar to bats. Structure II is integrated by three rooms with smooth façade walls decorated by small columns.

Chunhuhub is located 23 kilometers to the northeast of Bolonchen de Rejon in the municipality of Hopelchen in Campeche. From this last city take Federal Highway 261 until reaching the town of Bolonchen de Rejon at kilometer 23, then the detour to the town of Xculoc, found 5 kilometers away from the detour to Chuhuhub. Its schedule for visitors is from 08:00 to 17:00 hrs. In spring and summer, light clothes are crucial, because temperatures reach 86º F. During the months of June, July and August don’t forget insect repellent.
